Crescent Moon and Stars Tattoo

Fertility in the Romantic Crescent Moons and Stars Tattoo

While the moon and star each separately have their own meanings, together they take on a new symbolism all together. Years before the Turks converted to Islam the moon and star represented their shamanistic beliefs. The moon and star were also meant to represent the ancient city of Byzantium (now Istanbul). After the region was conquered by Osman and became part of the Ottoman Empire the moon and star was adopted to symbolize the Ottoman dynasty.

When the Turks and Christians were warring on each other across Europe the moon and star were attributed to the Islamic religion by mistake since Muslims abhor any iconic symbol when it comes to their religion.

The moon and star together symbolize the heavens and the divine, and is thought to be a very feminine symbol. A crescent moon represents transition and transformation. The moon was extremely important in early times as it was used to measure the passing of time, and it was an indispensible signal used by farmers to tell them when to plant and harvest their crops.

Many early cultures associated the moon with fertility, pregnancy and as the ruler over our emotions as well as the ocean tides. As organized religions emerged the moon was converted into a symbol of the occult.  A shining moon can be a romantic symbol and inspires lovers to divulge their feelings.
