Depending on the type and age of deer depicted this animal can have many meanings. As a fawn the deer is vulnerable, wide-eyed with innocence. A mother deer represents a watchful, doting mother who is ever-watchful for threats and danger. A male deer is strong, a good leader and fearsomely protective of his herd.
The deer earned itself special status among the Celts and Native Americans for their ability to find medicinal herbs. Deer have been entwined deeply in Greek mythology, as four golden-horned deer pulled the goddess Artemis’ carriage as she joined the hunt.
In China the deer stands for happiness and good fortune, while in Christian circles it can be a symbol of devotion and being in God’s care.
