Dog Tattoo

The Friend and Companion Dog Tattoo

Dogs are very popular in the tattoo world, which is not surprising given man’s affinity for canines. The dog can represent loyalty, vigilance and intelligence. Descended from the wolf, man has had a relationship with the modern dog since 15,000 years ago, beginning in China.

The dog in ancient times was often a symbol of the underworld. The Aztecs believed that a red dog led the dead across the Great River to the afterworld, while in Egypt a dog-headed god was a symbol of death and regeneration. In ancient Mexico a dog was often buried with a human sacrifice to guide it to the afterlife.

Of course today the dog is more of a companion than a symbol. Loyal, affectionate and often willing to protect its people at the cost of its own life the dog has evolved into a trusted friend and confidante. The type of breed you choose as your tattoo can certainly convey different meanings, and with nearly 400 breed around the world you will certainly have your work cut out for you.
