Dolphin Tattoo

It is not surprising that humans have such an affinity for the dolphin, given its intelligence and empathy. For ancient seafarers the dolphin was considered a good luck charm or a symbol of protection and guidance. Lost sailors were often helped back to port with the assistance of dolphins. In many cultures killing a dolphin was considered the same as killing a human being.

In Europe the dolphin was often adopted as a symbol on coats of arms and used to represent diligence, salvation, charity and love. Most cultures saw the dolphin as a connection between our world and the underwater world. The dolphin’s playfulness, gentleness and compassion has led to many innovations in therapy for the handicapped and depressed.
