The Medical and Magical Egyptian Tattoo
Ancient Egypt is a fascinating wealth of interesting symbols and animal figures, all rich in history and meaning. Hieroglyphs, gods and goddesses are all great sources for tattoo symbols. Of course, with Egypt being one of the first documented cultures to tattoo themselves holds its own interest as you explore the symbols that the early Egyptians used.
The earliest remains that have been discovered with tattoos date from around 2000 BC and were composed of lines and dots. It is thought that since these markings were found only on females that they promoted fertility. However, other reasons for tattooing include to connect oneself with the Divine, as a tribute or sacrifice, as a permanent talisman or to provide medical or magical protection to the wearer.
At around 400BC the first picture tattoos surfaced of the God Bes, who was the god of revelry and the patron god of musicians and dancing girls. The god was often found on the thighs of dancers and musicians in paintings, and has been found on female Nubian mummies dating back to the same time.
