The Sly and Sophisticated Fox Tattoo
Cunning, tricky and nocturnal, the fox is an interesting symbol. While a great predator, the fox’s small size means that it is often prey for larger animals. Since it has to be smart and witty to survive it is easy to see why humans identify with them.
Many indigenous peoples revered the fox for its abilities to hunt in the dark and thought that it was a communicator to the gods and a messenger between the living and dead.
Able to blend into their surroundings, the fox is able to outwit both farmers as well as any predator. Its impressive skills meant that many tribes thought it had supernatural powers.
Although the fox had many admirers, because of its nocturnal nature it was also associated with evil and death, often replacing the cat as a witch’s companion. When the witch hunts were on attempts were made to exterminate them. They were also believed to be shape shifters, thiefs, sly and sophisticated.
