The Fruitfulness of the Grape Tattoo
Grape images remind us of the pleasure of eating grapes, remind us of joi de vivre, and grapes can become a sensual tattoo when combined with vines that encircle the body.
The grape has long provided sustenance to humans, as far back as our cave dwelling days.
It didn’t take long for early humans to figure out that they could ferment the grapes and crush them to produce a delicious elixir.
Wine arrived in the Mediterranean about 8,000 years ago and there, in Turkey and Greece the art of wine making flourished. Both Greece and Rome had their own gods of wine and the regions had many festivals devoted to wine-drinking, dancing and theatre. After the fall of the Roman Empire many cultural traditions were lost, but thanks to some devoted monks the process of wine-making was preserved.
Religions often associate the grape with fruitfulness and the harvest, as well as immortality.
