Punishment and Judgment in Grasshopper Tattoos
While small and insignificant the grasshopper and locust have all have their place in many cultures. Native Americans thought of the grasshopper as a symbol of creation. In Egypt they wore amulets with a grasshopper on them to ward off locust plagues.
In the Bible the locust was a symbol of judgment or punishment, death and devastation. The Chinese believed that those who were sent to the ‘Sixth realm of Hell’ were eaten by locusts. Many cultures embrace the grasshopper as a nourishing food.
