Sororities and Fraternities Adopt Greek Alphabet Tattoos
The Greek alphabet was an adaptation of the lettering used by the Phoenician culture and was the basis of Cyrillic, Gothic, Coptic and Latin alphabets. It is the first alphabet to include vowels as well as consonants and was the basis for all Western alphabets. There is probably no human advancement that has as much significance as the development of the alphabet, as it allowed the recording of history, laws and arts.
Over time the letters of the Greek alphabet were used to represent certain groups of learning. In North America societies were formed who were devoted to higher learning and adopted a Greek letter to represent their fraternity. Nowadays fraternities and sororities are common at many universities and most have adopted a Greek letter as their insignia.
