Signifying death and transition, the Grim Reaper and the Skull were prevalent in medieval and renaissance art and served to remind us all that eventually we all die and the afterlife is waiting for us. It is common for artwork showing disease to also have a Grim Reaper on hand to collect the souls of the newly dead.
