The Virtuous Qualities of the Madonna/Jesus Tattoos
The Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus is one of the primary symbols for Christians everywhere and has been popular in the tattoo world for 150 years.
This symbol was common with sailors who needed to stay virtuous during long voyages. It was also thought that if subject to corporal punishment the sight of the Virgin and her babe would lessen the blow.
In medieval times the term ‘Madonna’ meant a woman of noble birth. The image was first used in Italian Renaissance art in the 14th century. When depicted the Virgin Mary is usually associated with the color blue and on occasion has angels surrounding her.
