Native American Tattoos Include Animals

The Native Americans have a long history of tattooing, although there isn’t much pictorial evidence to show us what the early tattoos looked like. Many tribes choose tattooing as a way to identify their tribe and their family unit.

Since most tribes were guarded by an animal it was popular to have that animal tattooed on the skin so it was always with them. Other cultures tattooed lines and dots on their faces.

The Haida people, being one of the last groups to be colonized, certainly advanced the tattooing art with their depictions of eagles, ravens, killer whales, salmon, hummingbirds, bear, frog and more. These animals were usually the clan crest of the person on whom it was tattooed on.

Those who are of Native American heritage may want to invest in some research to find the right symbol for them.
