The Reality of the Hindu Om Tattoo
This is the world’s most recognized sacred symbol and is the most important Hindu symbol as it represents the Absolute Reality or Brahman and contains the essence of the universe. The Om sign appears in every Hindu temple and on every shrine. It also appears in the Jain, Sikh and Buddhist religions.
In basic terms, Om is the sound of the infinite, and to pronounce it correctly is to create harmony and bliss from within the soul.
Om is made up of three curves, a semi-circle and a dot. The curves represent the states of our consciousness: awake looking outwards, deep in dreamless sleep and dreaming. The semicircle stands for illusion while the dot symbolizes the higher consciousness.
Om can stand for the triads of earth-atmosphere-heaven, past-present-future and birth-life-death, along with the elements of fire, sun and wind. It is also the symbol of the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, or Creation, Preservation and Destruction.
