Evil Lurks in the Japanese Oni Tattoo
In Japan the Oni is a demon who is associated with evil and distressful emotions. The demons hang around the dying in order to push them down into hell. Those who appreciate Japanese traditions and artwork are the same who admire the Oni, with bulging eyes, a snarling mouth and horns coming out of its head.
Ancient Japanese culture held the belief that by hanging drawings or masks of Oni or other terrifying creatures they could ward off evil or bad spirits. Oni was often associated with plagues, famine and earthquakes; however he also played a part in peace, fertility and longevity. To this day the Oni mask still appears in Japanese theatre.
