The Fragile and Fleeting Japanse Peony Tattoo
In Japanese tattoo art there is usually a pairing of elements, and the Peony is associated with the Japanese lion. In this respect the ferociousness of the lion is balanced out by the beauty of the peony flower.
Much like the chrysanthemum, lotus and cherry blossom, the peony has a great history and a rich symbolism in Asia.
In both China and Japan the peony represents wealth, which coincidentally, so does the Lion. It is no mistake why the both are often depicted together.
The peony can symbolize wealth, prosperity and good fortune. In the Japanese tattooing culture it can also mean daring, risk taking and a devil-may-care approach to life. It is a reminder of our fleeting, fragile existence and the fact that we should live each day to the fullest, as it may just be our last.
