Red Welsh Dragon Tattoo

The Heritage of Welsh Tattoos

This is probably one of the most popular tattoo designs for the Welsh and their descendants. It has been used for over 800 years as a symbol of the heritage of the Welsh and to strike terror in their enemies.

Of course the dragon was an Asian inspired creature whose existence was adopted by the Romans and eventually trickled down to the Welsh around the 4th century.

One of the most famous uses of the Red Welsh Dragon was on the standard of the Celtic King Arthur, although it was also used by Welsh King Henry VII when he rode into battle to claim England from Richard III.

While the Red Welsh Dragon may appear in many forms according to the College of Arms in London it must face to the left in a walking stance with its right paw raised, and must occupy equal parts of the white and green panels which are the national colors of Wales.
