Rock of Ages Tattoo

The Faith of Rock of Ages Tattoos

Also known as a sailor’s cross, this symbol has a rich and colourful history.

Of course sailors have been responsible, pretty much single-handedly for bringing the art of tattooing home with them from their explorations in the Polynesian island.

Sailors often tattooed themselves with amulets, phrases or talismans to keep them safe at sea. For example, many sailors would have “hold fast” tattooed across their knuckles in order to ensure they would never fall from the rigging.

The Rock of Ages tattoo depicts a sailor or man kneeling below a cross of stone. The significance of the stone cross was that it would never deteriorate, and neither would the man’s faith in God.
