The Ambitious and Courageous Rooster Tattoo
Being the first up in the morning has earned the rooster an undeniable association with sunrise, dawn and renewal. Of course, since the rooster is a male he has all the trappings of the gender: virile, defender of his flock, ambitious, curious, courageous and self reliant.
Greek and Egyptian mythologies tell of Abraxas, a god who had the head of a rooster.
He was a symbol of the sun and the darkness, and people would wear emblems with his image on it for protection.
The rooster has its place in religion too, as the Christians believed that the crow of a rooster could dispel evil spirits. The appearance of the ‘weather cock’ on many Christian churches was no coincidence, as it is seen to represent vigilance, faith and papal authority.
The Celts believed that a rooster would warn the gods of danger and was a messenger who would lead souls of the dead onto the next world. Some cultures banned the killing of rooster, while others would sacrifice a rooster during the harvest.
