The Heritage of Scottish Lion Tattoos
The Lion Rampant or Scottish Lion is considered Scotland’s second national flag. The lion is depicted in red, rising up on its back legs on a background of yellow. This particular flag replaced the boar on the flag in 1165.
While the Lion Rampant is supposed to be a banner only used by Scottish monarchs, royalty and government there are many who defy the rules by using it themselves.
It is thought that the Scottish Lion once was an Irish Lion that came to Scotland with Fergus, whom the Kings of Scotland descended from. However, to go even farther back the Irish Lion was thought to have come from Egypt.
For those who are proud of their Scottish heritage the Lion Rampant is a great choice for a tattoo.
