Considered in the west to be one of the greatest predators, the shark represents power and fearlessness.
Many sailors have shark tattoos to prove that they are not afraid of dying at sea. A shark following your ship was considered a bad sign, as it meant that they thought you would be their next meal.
To the First Nations people the shark was seen as a skilled hunter, and it was revered for its power. The Polynesians would tattoo themselves with the image of a shark in order to protect themselves from enemies.
