Thistle Tattoo

The Thistle Tattoos of Scotland

The thistle is as important to the Scots as the shamrock is to the Irish.

This tough plant can grow just about anywhere, and protects itself with tiny thorns.  While it certainly isn’t a remarkable plant, during times of near starvation the Scots could depend on this plant for sustenance. The milk thistle was a popular medicinal plant, able to treat illnesses of the stomach and liver.

Many Scottish Coats of Arms feature this prickly plant, and it is even featured in a Scottish Knighthood called the Order of the Thistle. Those who have a history with Scotland and wish to show off their heritage should consider this thorny fellow for a tattoo.
