The Power and Wisdom of Tribal Tattoos

Many people are fond of tribal tattoo designs, which explain why nearly 30% of all searches for tattoos include the word tribal.

It is commonly believed that the first tattoos happened by accident, perhaps with some youngsters playing around a fire.

Once tattoos were discovered they quickly caught on, and some of the first tattoos represented fire or flames, as well as the sun.

There were many reasons why tattoos appealed to early civilizations, and a lot of it had to do with preparing for the afterlife. It was thought that by adorning the body with symbols that were attributed to the spiritual realm would help secure a place in the beyond.

As people evolved, so did their reasons for tattooing. Many tribes used the markings to identify their clan or family, married people would get matching tattoos as a permanent reminder of their union and adolescents would get tattoos as a rite of passage before becoming an adult.

Another important reason for tribal tattoos was as a token of protection. It was thought that certain animals provided powers if they were etched on the skin. Some animals provided protection from evil spirits, others luck, and still more fertility, power, courageousness, wisdom and so on.
