Umbrella Tattoo

The Protection and Compassion of Umbrella Tattoos

The umbrella provides shelter and protects us from both the sun and rain so it is definitely a symbol of protection.

It can also mean that you are planning ahead, prepared for a rainy day (or bad day, etc). For Buddhist the dome of an umbrella or parasol represents wisdom while the skirt means compassion.

Religious leaders in Tibet received silk parasols, while secular ruler received parasols adorned with peacock feathers. A sign of high rank is a person who doesn’t hold their own umbrella, they have a servant to do it for them.

In recent society the make of an umbrella would denote your social status. The poor could not afford umbrellas, while the rich would have elaborate ones that were made from fine materials and embroidered with fancy threads. In fact it was a sign of high rank if you had extremely pale skin as it meant you did not have to labour outside.

The umbrella or parasol can also be used as a flirtatious device to catch the attention of an interesting male. A twirl or dip of the umbrella can indicate interest, while one can hide behind the umbrella to reserve modesty.
